Northern Ontario Gets World-Class Hiking Guide

Posted: June 4, 2007

The Voyageur Trail Association has released its 4th edition of the Voyageur Hiking Trail Guidebook. With its full colour maps accurately produced with GPS and GIS technology, hikers say this guidebook rivals in quality with any
of those produced for well-known trails around the world.

The 140-page guidebook includes many key features, such as the section overview, detailed description of trail access points, and trail descriptions, how to follow the trail tips to help make hiking the trail a pleasurable experience.

It took several years for the GPS work, writing of new descriptions, GIS and layout work to describe the over 600 km of trail (plus many loop and side trails) and the work was done entirely by volunteers and with the support of generous donations from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion, Natural Resources Canada, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.

The Voyageur Trail Guidebook is intended for hikers, trail joggers, snowshoers, backcountry skiiers, naturalists, and other non-motorized trail users. The maps, done at 1:50,000 scale--ideal for planning) are printed in full colour showing all key features important to hikers (accommodation, stores, campgrounds, lookouts, etc.) Individual map sections can be removed from the book for convenient use on the trail.

The first 300 books sold include a free map distance converter/ruler.

For Voyageur Trail members, the Guidebook is available from the Association at a cost of $25 (plus $8 for shipping) and members of the public can purchase the Guidebook for a cost of approximately $35 from many retailers throughout Ontario.

Membership in the Voyageur Trail Association is only $25 a year and for that, you will receive regular trail update information delivered to your door via their Newsletter.

The Voyageur Trail Association, a non-profit citizens' group in existence since 1973, is dedicated to building and maintaining a continuous hiking trail from Manitoulin Island to Thunder Bay, a distance of 1100 kilometres. Through co-operation of private landowners, native bands and by utilizing Crown Land, approximately half of this distance is completed in non-continuous sections along the north shores of Lakes Superior and Huron. The largest completed section runs between Elliot Lake to just west of Sault Ste. Marie.
