Hanover Community Trail SystemPosted: June 5, 2007
When the town of Hanover began their community trails project in 1995, it was with one goal in mind - to use the former railway line to develop a quality trail system. As the use of rail corridors to develop trail systems becomes more popular, places like Hanover, Saugeen and the Georgian Bay area gain hiking, biking and skiing routes. Like other rail trails, the Hanover trail is broad and flat. The terrain is classified as easy, making it an ideal destination for family outings. It's a great place to learn the basics of cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. In the green season, its hard packed surface could even provide a place to test those new training wheels. Perhaps the most amazing feature of the Hanover trail system is its proximity to the Saugeen River. The trail runs along the river and several small bridges cross the river and various streams. Fundraising continues for the completion of a pedestrian bridge over the Saugeen River, a crowning jewel for the trail. The river is a popular canoe route and fishing destination. The trail provides easy access along its 11 km length. The trail also provides access to several Hanover parks. The Karl Speck Wilken Park, Hanover Park and Rail Lands Leisure Park are all accessible from the trail. Washrooms are available in Hanover Park as well as at the Coliseum and Aquatic Centre. The Hanover Community Trail Committee maintains the trail. Volunteers are welcome to help out with trail maintenance, fundraising and publicity. While the trail is available for use free of charge, a metre of trail can be purchased for $20 in honour of a friend or loved one. These funds are used to ensure trail maintenance. For more information about the trail or to obtain a detailed trail map, contact Uses: Converted from the old CPR line, this trail has many uses. Signed official entrances are at the South Line (Concession Road 11), 7th Street and 2nd Avenue, adjoining the Leisure Park and soccer field, and on County Road 28 at the Saugeen River.
